Where do I stop and the rest of the world begins? How do I know who and what I am?

Libra teaches that we can only know the world– and ourselves– through relationship. Whatever I am, and whatever you are, can only be revealed through interaction. Every barrier I encounter on my path causes me to turn, whether I am a human, an animal, a plant, a river, a stone, or a star– or even a thought, or a beam of light.

Early interactions with people, objects, or events lay the grooves that we tend to run down throughout our lives. Later interactions can either dig the grooves deeper, or help us to see them and choose new paths. Either way, nothing will happen without some kind of interaction.

All of this happens automatically. We internalize externals and develop our perspective. Then we project that perspective onto the world, and take what we see for reality. But something magical happens when we begin to wake up and reflect consciously on this process. We see that we are constantly in the act of creating and being created.

To move more deeply into this process, we must learn to listen– listen to other people, listen to the world, to hidden parts of ourselves, to the subtle vibrations behind things. Listen, finally, to the primal sound of existence itself, and to the infinite, peaceful silence behind that. It’s all there, all the time.

How many of us actually listen to others? Usually, we are just waiting to insert our own perspective. But consider how bad it feels when you do not feel listened to. Why bother even sharing yourself? Now consider how good it feels when you are listened to. Love is born from listening. Resentment thrives in its absence.

How might the world change if even one time out of ten, we all chose to really listen to another person, without just waiting our turn to speak. Now, what if we could listen to the planet in this way? What if we could listen to more subtle realms in this way?

Listening is the key to relatedness. Relatedness is the key to balance. Balance is the key to blissful existence. It may be no exaggeration to say that, if you want to save the world, all you need to do is learn to listen.

It’s a New Moon, so plant the seed: “from this day forth, I choose to listen.”
